Winemakers
Grant Taylor, owner and winemaker established Valli in 1988. After 10 years making in wine in the US, he comes back in Otago (where he was born) to finally create a vineyard. He works along a lot of different famous vineyards in the 80’s (Carrick and Fleton Road among others), and decide to create his own, Valli and express the best of the three different “terroirs” of Otago: Bannockburn, Gibston and Waitaki. The inoovative Jen Parr is making the wines with him today. She came from the US to settle in New Zealand over 10 years ago and worked for vintage in some of the most important ones in the country.
Tasting notes
It’s a very dense and intense Otago Pinot Noir. It’s well-structured and has a long finish. Aromas of red and black berries and spices (white pepper). Tannins are fine but still need a bit of time to soften and be really nice (aged in french oak with 35% new and 35% one year old). It will aged very well in bottle for 4 to 6 years.
Fun Fact
This is the youngest vineyard in the country. The first vines were planted in 2001 in the Waitaki Valley. Situated right in the middle of Canterbury and Otago, this region if cooler than its big sisters and benefits from oceanic influences as well.
